Tape Chants explores the intersection of analog tape manipulation, acoustic instrumentation, and sine-wave oscillators, creating richly layered drones and evolving harmonic textures. Developed from a series of site-specific, multichannel performances using cassette players distributed throughout a space, the album translates these spatial experiments into immersive electroacoustic compositions.
Tendrils in Vigne, LP (Rootstrata, 2007) Live Recording of the Contemporary Performance Ensemble, Composed and Conducted by Gregg Kowalsky, Produced by Fred Frith, recorded by Norman Teale. Mastered by Rootstrata
Tendrils In Vigne originated as Gregg Kowalsky’s 2006 thesis performance at Mills College, in which he adapted an electronic composition for a 25-piece acoustic ensemble. Divided into eight instrumental groups performing interwoven, repetitive patterns, the ensemble was conducted through Gregg’s live-mixing technique, using hand signals to control each group’s entrances and dynamics.
